SIGG Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
On this page you will find all important information about products.
1. Does the coating of the SIGG aluminum bottle contain nickel?
No, the coating of SIGG aluminum bottles does not contain nickel.
2. Why does my aluminum bottle have a notch/dent on the bottom?
One step in the production of our aluminum bottles is the creation of the registration groove (notch) on the bottom of each SIGG bottle. This is used for further designing the outside with the desired color and motif, so that multi-colored screen prints can be placed exactly on top of each other. It is therefore a necessary, production-related element on your aluminum bottle. Even if your bottle is only one color, the PASSERNUT is on the bottom of every SIGG aluminum bottle.
3. How do I find the right spare part for my SIGG bottle?
You can find the right spare parts for your bottle here: Spare parts and accessories
4. Does SIGG still produce household products? Are there still spare parts for various household items?
No. We have not produced household products since 1998 because we have focused our production entirely on drinking bottles. There is no successor who has taken over this. Production has been discontinued.
5. What is meant by "do not insert body parts"?
Do not put your tongue or fingers into the opening of the drinking bottle, as they could get stuck and swell. However, you can drink directly from the bottle without any problems.
6. Can hot water be filled into an aluminum bottle?
Aluminium is an excellent conductor of heat. This means that the temperature of the liquid is also noticeable on the outside of the drinking bottle. We therefore recommend filling it with water at a maximum temperature of 40°C.
7. Where can the aluminum bottle be recycled?
The aluminum bottle can be disposed of at any aluminum recycling center. The various lids also have a recycling code that indicates whether and how the lids can be recycled.
8. How can I order on account?
We do not currently offer invoices or advance payments for private individuals.
9. How can I exchange or return an item?
You don't like your item? The wrong product was in the mail or something is missing from your order? We accept complaints via our contact form. We also need the order number as it appears on the invoice. Would you like to exchange or cancel your order? Please send the package back to our address within 14 days of receipt (if exchanging, please state which item you would like to exchange it for). As soon as we have received the goods, we will send you the new product or refund the amount (if the goods have not been used). Please note that we do not cover the shipping costs. For detailed information on returning the purchased products, please read our cancellation policy. If the SIGG product was purchased in a store or on a website other than www.sigg.com, we ask that you contact the retailer directly.
10. Are SIGG bottles suitable for the microwave?
The bottles must not be placed in the microwave, on a hot stove, in a hot oven or in the freezer.
11. Are SIGG bottles suitable for the freezer?
Please do not place your SIGG bottle in the freezer. The low temperatures can cause the contents of the bottle to expand, which can lead to destruction or deformation.
12. I need an express order, what can I do?
If you need your order urgently, please call us. We will be happy to check how we can ship your order as quickly as possible.
13. What is the best way to clean the WMB ONE?
The WMB ONE Top is dishwasher safe. However, to maintain the high quality of the product, we recommend cleaning the top by hand. The inner sealing ring can be removed, which also allows residues behind the seal to be cleaned. The sealing units can also be boiled.
14. What products does SIGG sell?
Our product range and expertise revolve around our core product: drinking bottles. At SIGG, we offer a wide range of such bottles with drinking solutions for every activity in everyday life. We offer bottles made of aluminum, 18/8 stainless steel, glass, Tritan and polypropylene. SIGG also has a large range of lunch boxes, spare parts and accessories for every drinking bottle.
15. What bottle materials does SIGG offer?
SIGG drinking bottles are available in five main materials: aluminum, 18/8 stainless steel, glass, Tritan and polypropylene. With the wide range of bottles made of different materials, we want to meet the needs of our customers and offer products for different age groups and activities.
Aluminium SIGG has been producing aluminium bottles since the early 20th century and continues to do so successfully. Aluminium is a great material; it is the most abundant material in the earth's crust after oxygen and silicon. It is also lightweight and can be recycled using little energy. You can find more information about the aluminium we use to make our bottles here .
18/8 stainless steel The 18/8 stainless steel used to make our bottle is shatterproof and represents timeless elegance. The stainless steel drinking bottles offer optimal hygienic conditions and always remain tasteless and odorless. After the stainless steel bottle has been a reliable companion for many years, it can be fully recycled.
Polypropylene (PP) Polypropylene is a very strong and resilient plastic that is used to manufacture a large number of our bottles (e.g. Pulsar, VIVA, Hero drinking bottles). The high-quality and reusable drinking bottles made of polypropylene are recyclable and free of harmful substances such as BPA. After the drinking bottle made of polypropylene has been a reliable companion for many years, it can be fully recycled.
Glass drinking bottles made of glass ensure a pleasant drinking experience and are good for you and the environment. The material is food-safe, does not absorb odors, tastes or discoloration and is free of harmful substances. Products such as Star, Dream and Hot & Cold glass drinking bottles are made in China from heat-resistant borosilicate glass. The Stella bottles are made in Italy from a glass melt of sand, soda and other hand-picked components. The inside of the lid is made of stainless steel, so the contents only come into contact with glass and stainless steel. The Stella bottles are also fully recyclable.
Tritan™ The patented plastic Tritan™ is completely free of harmful substances such as estrogen-active substances and phthalates. The material looks like glass, but is light as a feather, shatterproof, tasteless and odorless, and dishwasher safe up to 90°C. Like all our other materials, Tritan™ is also recyclable. You can find more information about the Tritan Renew material here.
16. Are SIGG water bottles safe?
Absolutely. Since 1908, we have been using the best and safest materials to manufacture our products. At SIGG, we carry out very strict safety tests to guarantee the highest quality of our products. We know that safety is our customers' top priority, so we focus all our efforts on this aspect before launching a product on the market.
17. Is aluminum safe?
SIGG aluminum drinking bottles are completely safe. We are aware that some concerns have been raised about the safety of aluminum in the food industry, but we would never rely on aluminum if we knew it was harmful to our customers. We use a high-quality coating so that our drinking bottles are completely safe and comply with all consumer safety regulations in the countries in which they are sold. The inner coating used in our production is widely used in various food containers and complies with strict EU/US regulations. In addition, the inner coating is tested hourly during the production process of our aluminum bottles to ensure the highest quality and safety. When it comes to safety testing, we are at the forefront: We not only carry out the tests required by safety regulations, but also commission independent testing from third-party laboratories to get even better.
18. Is stainless steel safe?
Yes. The 18/8 stainless steel we use for our drinking bottles is specifically designed for the food industry. We maintain regular contact with our partners in the manufacturing plants to ensure that all quality and safety requirements are met. We also carry out safety and quality checks for all drinking bottles produced at our headquarters in Switzerland. However, we do not recommend the use of stainless steel for people who are allergic to chrome or nickel, as very small amounts can escape from the material.
19. Is plastic safe?
We use polypropylene (PP) and Tritan to manufacture our plastic bottles. Both materials are safe, food-grade and free from harmful substances such as BPA or phthalates.
20. Is glass safe?
Glass is highly valued in the food industry due to its excellent properties. It is inert, meaning it does not interact chemically with other materials, and it is non-porous, meaning it does not transfer odors or flavors. SIGG bottles made from glass are also free of BPA and phthalates.
21. Does SIGG drinking bottles contain BPA?
All SIGG drinking bottles are BPA-free. We test all materials and parts of our containers before they go into production and also rely on additional tests in third-party partner laboratories before the products receive market approval.
22. What sizes do SIGG products have?
Detailed information about the size of each product, including: weight, height, diameter and size, is provided on the product detail page. In addition, the size of the bottle is always included in the product name.
23. What is the coating on our aluminum bottles made of? (What is it used for, what is it made of?) Can small dents/pressure marks on the bottle damage the inner coating?
Our aluminum drinking bottles have an inner protective coating. We use a polyester-based coating (similar to that used for cans in the food industry) that ensures a fresh, clean taste without a metallic aftertaste. The inner coating is flexible, meaning it does not come off if the bottle surface is dented or broken. It is also odorless and tasteless and free of BPA and other harmful substances (according to Ökotest from April 2019, laboratory testers found no metals at all in our aluminum bottle). All materials used for the inner coating meet all EU & FDA guidelines such as LFGB, EUV 1935/2004, EUV 10/2011 as well as US-CPSIA 2008 and FDA 21 CFR 175.300. In addition, the inner coating is tested hourly during the production process of our aluminum bottles to ensure the highest quality and safety.
24. How are SIGG bottles made?
Aluminium It all starts with a piece of aluminium, the so-called "slug", which has the shape of an ice hockey puck. This is formed into a cylinder by a piston stroke weighing up to 600 tons along a pressing tool. The cylinder is formed into a bottle with the help of up to 26 differently designed tools, each of which moves the metal further towards its final shape. When the bottle has achieved its iconic shape, the inside of the bottle is coated with our internal lacquer to avoid direct contact between the liquids and the aluminium. Once the shape and interior of the bottle are ready, the outside is screen printed with the desired colour and design. The lid is put on and a visual quality control ensures that all bottles leaving the production line are in perfect condition. Before being launched on the market, each product is thoroughly tested by independent laboratories and checked for compliance with standards and regulations.
18/8 stainless steel We use food-grade 18/8 steel (AISI 304, SUS 304) for all our stainless steel items. 18/8 stainless steel has excellent resistance to a wide range of atmospheric environments and liquids. However, under adverse conditions, stainless steel can also rust. This can, however, be polished or sanded off. The insulated bottles consist of two parts that are fitted together and meet at the bottle neck. The gap between them is vacuum-insulated. A SIGG insulated bottle has excellent gas absorption power because it contains zirconium, which increases the vacuum and insulation effect.
Glass Soda-lime glass is chemically resistant, sufficiently hard and very easy to process. Since it can be softened and melted down several times, it is ideal for glass and recycling. Borosilicate glass is an extremely chemical and temperature-resistant glass that is mainly used in laboratories, chemical plants and in the home.
Tritan™ With the injection molding process, the plastic is first injected into a "preform". The preforms are manufactured with the bottle necks including the threads at one end. They are further processed in the push-in blow molding machine. The preforms are poured into the bottle shape using high-pressure air through metal blow molds.
Polypropylene (PP) Extrusion blow molding (EBM) involves melting plastic, extruding it into a narrow tube and then enclosing it in a cooled metal mold. Air is then blown into the tube and it inflates into the shape of a bottle. It's a bit like making macaroni and then molding it with a mold.
25. Where are SIGG drinking bottles manufactured?
We are a proud Swiss company and have always championed Switzerland as a production location. Therefore, all SIGG aluminum drinking bottles are made in Switzerland. However, since we were not always able to find a suitable production partner at the desired location, our stainless steel and glass bottles are manufactured by our partners in China, who strictly follow our production guidelines and quality specifications. We produce most of our plastic drinking bottles in Germany and the rest of our plastic products in China. The origin of the products is always indicated on the product itself or on the packaging.
26. Why is SIGG now having drinking bottles produced in China?
We chose our manufacturer in China based on their expertise, as they have been producing high-quality thermal products for many years and have the necessary experience, equipment and highly qualified staff in this field. Our partner in China is also our parent company. Even though the bottles are produced outside Switzerland, we can be sure that all of our products have the Swiss spirit and quality.
27. Safety inspections and certifications
Before a product comes onto the market, it is tested by an external testing institute to ensure that it complies with the applicable regulations (such as BPA tests, LFGB, 1935/2004, FDA, etc.).
28. Hand wash or dishwasher?
In general, we recommend not cleaning SIGG drinking bottles in the dishwasher. Aggressive cleaning agents in dishwashers can damage the bottle's paintwork and, in the case of aluminum bottles, the inner coating. Due to the narrow opening of the classic SIGG drinking bottle, dishwashers do not produce good cleaning results anyway. To enjoy SIGG drinking bottles for a long time, you should wash them regularly by hand. The bottle and its top should be rinsed with hot water after each use. Leave the lid open to dry and when storing.
29. Cleaning SIGG VIVA bottles
Our SIGG VIVA drinking bottles are made of polypropylene and are dishwasher safe thanks to the material's high temperature resistance. However, we recommend washing the containers by hand with a mild detergent or our cleaning tabs. This will not damage the printing ink on the drinking bottle and also ensures that no aggressive dishwasher detergents will damage the bottle. Thanks to its wide drinking opening, this type of bottle can be easily cleaned with a brush or sponge.
30. Cleaning SIGG Hot & Cold bottles
We recommend cleaning SIGG Hot & Cold drinking bottles with two tablespoons of water-diluted vinegar before first use and rinsing thoroughly with warm water. After each use, the silicone seals should be removed for a particularly good cleaning. To avoid damaging the bottle, clean it by hand if possible. The best way to do this is to use SIGG cleaning tablets with water or a mild cleaning agent. Products containing chlorine and abrasive cleaners are not suitable.
31. Cleaning SIGG aluminum drinking bottles
For these drinking bottles, the SIGG cleaning tablets with water or a mild cleaning agent are best (strong cleaning agents can damage the inner paint). The aluminum bottles should not be cleaned in the dishwasher, as this can damage the paint and the inner coating.
32. Cleaning SIGG glass drinking bottles
Hand wash only. Before first use, clean all parts with soapy water and rinse thoroughly with water. Do not use cleaning products containing bleach or chlorine. We recommend using a soft cloth or sponge with the SIGG cleaning tablets or a mild cleaning agent. Steel brushes and polishing agents are not suitable for cleaning. The silicone parts can be removed and cleaned separately.
33. Aluminum boxes: characteristics and cleaning recommendations
The SIGG aluminum boxes are perfect containers for food that does not need to be stored at specific temperatures, as they do not have any insulating properties. These boxes are designed for solid food, not liquids. The aluminum boxes should be washed by hand with soapy water and a sponge, as a dishwasher could damage the paint and the aluminum. Aluminum is a metal - so please do not use these boxes in the microwave.
34. What liquids can I store in SIGG drinking bottles?
All SIGG drinking bottles have been tested with many different types of drinks, such as acidic drinks, carbonated drinks, milk, alcohol, apple and lemon juice, etc. However, we do not recommend leaving drinks with natural fermentation processes, such as apple juice or milk, in the bottle for long periods of time. This natural process can encourage bacterial growth and create gases and strong odors that are difficult to eliminate.
35. Is the sealing ring for the screw cap replaceable?
The sealing ring on our classic screw cap is not replaceable. This makes it easier to clean and ensures that no dirt accumulates between the seal and the cap. If the sealing ring has moisture stains or mold, you should replace the cap. The caps should be cleaned frequently and then dried.
36. Is it possible that the paint on my water bottle is peeling off?
Regular quality checks guarantee a very durable outer coating. However, deep scratches or dents can cause the coating to chip. If moisture gets between the coating and the outside of the drinking bottle, the paint can flake off. However, this does not affect the functionality of the drinking bottle.
37. Are the drinking bottles leak-proof?
All SIGG caps are waterproof. But caps and seals are also subject to normal wear and tear from intensive use. We recommend not washing the bottle cap in the dishwasher, but removing it, rinsing it with hot water and letting it air dry. It is often also helpful to replace the bottle seal where possible. This is available as a spare part from retailers and in our web shop.
38. The sealant is peeling off. What can I do?
If for any reason the inner seal of the water bottle is peeling off, we are happy to help. The best way to do this is to send an email to our customer service with pictures of the water bottle and an explanation.
