SIGG FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Learn the answers to frequently asked questions about SIGG Switzerland Bottles.

1. Does the coating of the SIGG aluminium bottle contain nickel?

No, the coating of the SIGG aluminium bottles does not contain nickel.

2. Why does my aluminium bottle have a notch/dent at the bottom?

One step in the production of our aluminium bottles is the addition of the register notch (indentation) at the bottom of each SIGG bottle. This allows for the precise overlay of multicoloured screen printing on the exterior design in the chosen colour and style. Hence it is a necessary element in the production of your aluminium bottle. Even if your bottle is only one colour, the dent can be found at the bottom of every SIGG Aluminium Bottle.

3. How do I find the right spare part for my SIGG bottle?

You can find the right spare parts for your bottle here: Accessories

4. Does SIGG still produce household products? Are there still spare parts for the household items range?

No. We stopped producing household products in 1998, as we focused our production entirely on drinking bottles. In addition, no successor took over this production. It was discontinued.

5. What is meant by "do not insert body parts"?

This warns you against sticking your tongue or fingers in the opening of the drinking bottle, as these could get stuck and swell up. However, you can drink directly from the bottle without any worries.

6. Can you put hot water in an aluminium bottle?

Aluminium is an excellent conductor of heat. This means that the temperature of the liquid inside the drinking bottle can also be felt on the outside. Therefore, we advise filling with water that is no hotter than 40°C.

7. Where can I recycle the aluminium bottle?

You can dispose of the aluminium bottle at any aluminium recycling point. The various lids also have a recycling code that indicates whether and how the lids can be recycled.

8. How can I order on account?

For private individuals, we offer advance payments. Please send us an email specifying the desired items and your address: [email protected]. (Exception: Orders in a company name. Please contact us by email: [email protected] to process the order).

9. How can I exchange or return an item?

Are you not satisfied with your article? Did you receive the wrong product in the post or something is missing from the order? We accept complaints via our contact form. In order to process them, we also need the order number as it appears on the invoice. Do you want to exchange or cancel your order? Please return the package to our address within 14 days of receipt (in the case of an exchange, please state which item you would like to exchange it for). Once we have received the goods, we will send the new product or refund the amount (if the goods are unused). Please note that we do not cover the shipping costs. For detailed information about returning the purchased products, please read our Cancellation Policy. If the SIGG product was purchased from a shop or website other than www.sigg.com, please contact the retailer directly.

10. Are SIGG bottles microwave-safe?

Do not place the bottles in the microwave, on a hot cooker top, in a hot oven or in the freezer.

11. Are SIGG bottles suitable for use in the freezer ?

Please do not put your SIGG bottle in the freezer. The low temperatures can cause the contents of the bottle to expand, which can lead to destruction or deformation.

12. I need an express order, what can I do?

If you need your order urgently, please call us. We’ll be happy to find a way to send your order as quickly as possible.

13. What’s the best way to clean the WMB ONE top?

The WMB ONE top is dishwasher safe. However, to maintain the high quality of the product, we recommend cleaning the top by hand. The inner sealing ring can be removed, which also allows residues behind the seal to be removed. The sealing units can also be boiled.

14. What products does SIGG sell?

Our product range and expertise revolve around our core product: drinking bottles. At SIGG, we offer a wide range of such bottles with drinking solutions for every activity of daily life. We offer bottles made of aluminium, 18/8 stainless steel, glass, Tritan and polypropylene. SIGG also offers a wide range of lunch boxes, spare parts and accessories for every drinking bottle.

15. Which bottle materials does SIGG offer?

SIGG drinking bottles are available in five main materials: aluminium, 18/8 stainless steel, glass, Tritan and polypropylene. We strive to satisfy the needs of our clients by providing a wide range of bottles made of various materials and providing goods for various age groups and activities.

Aluminium
SIGG has been manufacturing aluminium bottles since the beginning of the 20th century and continues to do so successfully. Aluminium is a great material; it is the most abundant in the earth's crust after oxygen and silicon. It is also lightweight and requires little energy to recycle. You can find more information about the aluminium we use to make our bottles here.

18/8 stainless steel
The 18/8 stainless steel used to make our bottle is both unbreakable and a symbol of classic beauty. The stainless steel water bottles provide the best hygienic conditions and consistently maintain their neutral flavour and odour. After serving as a reliable companion for many years, the stainless steel bottle can be completely recycled.

Polypropylene (PP)
Polypropylene is a very strong and resilient plastic that is used to produce of a large number of our bottles (e.g. Pulsar, VIVA, Hero water bottles). The high-quality and reusable polypropylene water bottles are recyclable and contain no harmful substances such as BPA. After serving as a reliable companion for many years, the polypropylene water bottle can be completely recycled.

Glass
Glass water bottles provide a pleasant drinking experience and are good for you and for the environment. The material is food-grade, does not absorb odours, tastes or discolouration and does not contain any harmful substances. Products such as Star, Dream and Hot & Cold glass drinking bottles are made in China from heat-resistant borosilicate glass. Stella bottles are made in Italy from a glass melt of sand, soda and other hand-picked components. The inside of the lid is fitted with stainless steel, meaning that the contents only come into contact with glass and stainless steel. The Stella bottles are also fully recyclable.

Tritan™
The patented plastic Tritan™ contains absolutely no harmful substances such as oestrogen-active substances and phthalates. The material looks like glass, but is feather-light, shatterproof, neutral in taste and smell and dishwasher-safe up to 90°C. Like all our other materials, Tritan™ is recyclable. You can find more information about the Tritan Renew material here.

16. Are SIGG drinking bottles safe?

Absolutely. Since 1908, we have used the best and safest materials to manufacture our products. At SIGG we carry out very strict safety tests to guarantee the highest quality for our products. We know that our customers put safety first. Hence we focus all our efforts on this aspect before launching a product.

17. Is aluminium safe?

SIGG aluminium water bottles are completely safe. We know that some concerns have been raised about the safety of aluminium in the food industry, but we would never use aluminium if we knew it would harm our customers. We use a high quality coating to ensure that our water bottles are completely safe and comply with all consumer safety regulations in the countries where they are sold. The inner coating used in our production is widely used in various food containers and complies with strict EU/USA regulations. To ensure the highest quality and safety, the inner coating is also checked every during the production process of our aluminium bottles. When it comes to safety inspections, we’re ahead of the curve: Not only do we carry out the tests stipulated by safety regulations, but we also go one step further and commission independent tests from third-party laboratories.

18. Is stainless steel safe?

Yes. Stainless steel 18/8, which we use for our water bottles, is especially suitable for the food industry. We maintain regular contact with our partners in the manufacturing plants to guarantee that all quality and safety specifications are met. We also carry out safety and quality tests for all drinking bottles produced at our company headquarters in Switzerland. Nevertheless, we recommend people who are allergic to chrome or nickel not to use stainless steel, as very small amounts can leak from the material.

19. Is plastic safe?

We use polypropylene (PP) and Tritan to manufacture our plastic bottles. Both materials are safe, food-grade and free from harmful substances such as BPA or phthalates.

20. Is glass safe?

Glass is highly valued in the food industry for its excellent properties. It is inert, so it does not interact chemically with other materials, and it is non-porous, so it does not transfuse odours or flavours. SIGG glass bottles are also free of BPA and phthalates.

21. Is there BPA in SIGG drinking bottles ?

All SIGG drinking bottles are free from BPA. Before going into production, we test all of the components of our containers, and we also employ extra testing in independent labs before items are approved for sale.

22. What sizes are SIGG products available in?

Detailed information about the size of each product, including: weight, height, diameter and size, are indicated on the product detail page. In addition, the size of the bottle is always included in the product name.

23. What is the coating of our aluminium bottles made of? (What purpose does it serve, what is it made of?) Can small dents/pressure marks on the bottle damage the inner coating?

Our aluminium water bottles have a protective inner coating. We use a polyester-based coating for this (similar to that used for cans in the food sector), which provides a fresh, clean taste with no metallic aftertaste. The inner coating is flexible, i.e. it does not come off if the bottle surface is dented or breaks. It is also odourless, tasteless and free from BPA and other harmful substances (in April 2019, laboratory testers from Ökotest found no metals at all in our aluminium bottle.). All materials used for the inner coating comply with all EU- & FDA guidelines such as LFGB, EUV 1935/2004, EUV 10/2011 as well as US-CPSIA 2008 and FDA 21 CFR 175.300. Furthermore, during the production process of our aluminium bottles the inner coating is inspected hourly, to ensure the highest level of quality and safety.

24. How are SIGG bottles made?

Aluminium
It all starts with a piece of aluminium, the so-called "slug", which has the shape of an ice hockey puck. This is formed into a cylinder via a piston stroke weighing up to 600 tonnes along a pressing tool. With the aid of up to 26 uniquely designed tools, the cylinder is shaped into a bottle, with each tool advancing the metal closer to its finished form. Once the bottle has taken on its signature shape, the interior is given its inner coating to keep liquids from coming into direct contact with the aluminium. Once the shape and the inside of the bottle are ready, the outside is screen-printed with the desired colour and design. After the lid is put on, a visual quality check is performed to make sure all bottles are in perfect condition before they leave the production line. Before being launched on the market, each product is thoroughly tested by independent laboratories and checked for compliance with standards and regulations.

18/8 stainless steel
We use 18/8 food-grade steel (AISI 304, SUS 304) for all our stainless steel items. 18/8 stainless steel possesses excellent resistance to a wide range of atmospheric environments and liquids. Under adverse conditions, however, stainless steel can also begin to rust. Nevertheless, this can be polished or ground off. The insulated bottles consist of two parts that are joined together and converge at the neck of the bottle. The gap in between is vacuum insulated. A SIGG insulated bottle has excellent gas absorption power because it contains zirconium, which increases the vacuum and insulation effect.

Glass
Soda-lime glass is chemically resistant, sufficiently hard and very easy to work with. As it can be re-softened and melted down several times, it is ideal for glass and recycling. Borosilicate glass is an extremely chemical- and temperature-resistant glass that is mainly used in laboratories, chemical plants and households.

Tritan™
During the injection stretch blow moulding process, the plastic is first injected into a "preform" by injection moulding. The preforms are manufactured with the bottle necks as well as the threads on one end. They are further processed in the stretch blowing machine. The preforms are poured into the bottle mould using high-pressure air through metallic blow moulds.

Polypropylene (PP)
In extrusion blow moulding (EBM), plastic is melted, extruded into a narrow tube and then captured by closing it into a cooled metal mould. Air is then blown into the tube and this is inflated to the shape of a bottle. The whole thing is a bit like making macaroni and then shaping it with a mould.

25. Where are SIGG drinking bottles manufactured?

We are a proud Swiss company and have always supported Switzerland as a production location. That's why all SIGG aluminium water bottles are made in Switzerland. However, because we were not always able to find a suitable production partner at the desired location, our stainless steel and glass bottles are produced by our partners in China, who rigorously adhere to our production requirements and quality specifications. We produce most of our plastic water bottles in Germany and the rest of our plastic products in China. The origin of the products is always indicated on the product itself or on the packaging.

26. Why does SIGG now have drinking bottles produced in China?

We chose our manufacturer in China for its expertise; it has been producing high quality thermal products for many years and possesses the necessary experience, equipment and highly qualified personnel in this field. Our partner in China is also our parent company. Even though the bottles are produced outside Switzerland, we can be sure that Swiss spirit and quality live in all our products.

27. Safety tests and certificates

Before a product is launched on the market, it is tested by an external testing institute to ensure that it complies with the applicable regulations (such as BPA tests, LFGB, 1935/2004, FDA, etc.).

28. Hand wash or dishwasher?

We generally recommend that SIGG drinking bottles are not cleaned in the dishwasher. Aggressive cleaning agents in dishwashers can damage the bottle’s paintwork and, in the case of aluminium bottles, the inner coating. Due to its narrow opening, the classic SIGG drinking bottle is not cleaned very well by dishwashers anyway. To ensure long-lasting enjoyment of SIGG drinking bottles, you should wash them regularly by hand. The bottle and its top must be rinsed with hot water after each use. Leave the lid open while drying and during storage.

29. Cleaning SIGG VIVA bottles

Our SIGG VIVA water bottles are made of polypropylene and are dishwasher safe thanks to the material's high temperature resistance. However, we recommend washing the containers by hand with a mild detergent or our cleaning tablets. This ensures that neither the print on the water bottle, nor its durability will be harmed by abrasive dishwasher detergents. Thanks to its wide neck, this type of bottle is easy to clean with a brush or sponge.

30. Cleaning SIGG Hot & Cold bottles

Before the first use, we recommend cleaning SIGG Hot & Cold drinking bottles with two tablespoons of vinegar diluted with water and rinsing thoroughly with warm water. After each use, the silicone seals should be removed to ensure especially deep cleaning. If possible, clean the bottle hand to avoid damaging it. The best way to do this is to use the SIGG cleaning tablets with water or a mild detergent. Products containing chlorine and abrasives are not suitable.

31. Cleaning SIGG aluminium water bottles

The SIGG cleaning tablets with water, or alternatively a mild detergent are best suited for these bottles (strong detergents can damage the inner coating). The aluminium bottles should not be cleaned in the dishwasher, as this can damage the printed exterior and the interior coating.

32. Cleaning SIGG glass water bottles

Hand wash only. Before first use, clean all parts with soapy water and rinse thoroughly with water. Do not use cleaning agents containing bleach or chlorine. We recommend using a soft cloth or sponge with the SIGG cleaning tablets or a mild detergent. Steel brushes and polishing agents are unsuitable for cleaning. The silicone parts can be removed and cleaned separately.

33. Aluminium boxes: Features and cleaning recommendations

As they have no insulating properties, the SIGG aluminium boxes are perfect containers for food that does not need to be stored at certain temperatures. These boxes are designed for solid food, not liquids. The aluminium boxes should be washed by hand with soapy water and a sponge, as the printed exterior and the aluminium could be damaged in the dishwasher. Aluminium is a metal – therefore please do not use these boxes in the microwave.

34. What liquids can I store in SIGG drinking bottles ?

All SIGG drinking bottles have been tested with many different types of drinks, such as acidic drinks, carbonated drinks, milk, alcohol, apple juice and lemon juice etc. However, we do not recommend leaving drinks that ferment naturally, such as apple juice or milk, in the bottle for long periods of time. This natural process can promote bacterial growth and produce gases and strong odours that are difficult to eliminate.

35. Can the sealing ring for the screw cap be replaced?

The sealing ring of our classic screw cap is not replaceable. This makes it easier to clean and we ensure that no dirt accumulates between the seal and the lid. If the sealing ring exhibits moisture stains or mould, you should replace the cap. The caps should be cleaned frequently and then dried.

36. Is it possible that the outer coating on my drinking bottle is peeling off?

Regular quality checks guarantee a very durable outer coating. However, deep scratches or dents can cause it to chip off. If moisture gets between the coating and the outside of the drinking bottle, the paint can peel off. However, this does not affect the function of the drinking bottle.

37. Are the drinking bottles leak-proof?

All SIGG closures are watertight. However, closures and seals are also subject to normal wear and tear caused by intensive use. We recommend that the bottle cap is not washed in the dishwasher, but instead removed, rinsed with hot water and allowed to air dry. It is often helpful to replace the bottle seal where possible. This is available as a spare part from dealers and in our webshop.

38. The inner liner is peeling off. What can I do?

If for some reason the inner liner of the drinking bottle is peeling off, we will be happy to help. The best way to do this is to send an email with pictures of the drinking bottle and an explanation to our customer service.
