1. What products does SIGG™ offer?

Our expertise and main offer to our customers is drinking bottles. At SIGG™, we have a wide range of bottles that offer you drinking solutions to accompany you in every activity of your day-to-day life. We offer 5 main bottle categories to cover every aspect of your life:

  • The one and only Classic SIGG™ bottle, with its iconic and globally recognised shape and designs.
  • The SIGG™ Hot & Cold line, with great insulation performance and internationally awarded designs.
  • Our Active bottles are designed with sporty shapes and feature high-performance drinking tops.

2. What bottle materials does SIGG™ offer?

At SIGG™ we offer 5 main bottle materials: aluminium or glass for our Classic bottles, 18/8 stainless steel or glass for our Hot & Cold line, polypropylene for the VIVA and HERO bottles, and Tritan for our Total Clear, Miracle and Sexy bottles.

Aluminium

SIGG™ has produced aluminium bottles since the beginning of the 20th century and we still believe in this material. Aluminium is one of the most abundant elements in the earth’s crust, it is very easy to recycle and requires very little energy to do so. The raw material for our bottles comes from the European Union. Aluminium keeps out micro-organisms, air and light, ensuring that the contents stay fresh for a long time. It is a lightweight and durable metal – there are SIGG™ bottles out there that are still being used after 30 years!

Stainless steel

Building on the success of the original SIGG™ aluminium bottle and market demands, we at SIGG™ have expanded our product portfolio with the dynamic SIGG™ Hot & Cold line. The line is made of 18/8 Food Grade Steel (AISI 304, SUS 304), which contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel. These two elements are essential in the balance of the steel to eliminate corrosion and leaching of the iron-based material. This metal is not as lightweight as aluminium, but it’s very strong and resistant to dents and scratches. We also believe in this material not only because it is a long-lasting material, like aluminium, but also because it is 100% recyclable.

Polypropylene (PP)

Our VIVA and HERO bottles and most of our tops are made of high-quality PP, which is a very resistant thermoplastic frequently used in the food industry, and it does not contain BPA, as most other plastics do. PP also works very well as a container because it’s resistant to the high temperatures that can be reached in microwaves and dishwashers, for example. With polypropylene, we can offer a transparent, lightweight and durable bottle which, like the whole SIGG range, is completely toxin free.

Glass (borosilicate glass)

There is no material purer than glass. Glass is inert, non-toxic, easy to clean, easy to maintain and easy to recycle. It offers unparalleled purity and preserves any beverage’s pure taste. We chose borosilicate glass because it’s resistant to higher temperatures and to chemical corrosion. As a pure material, borosilicate glass is very popular in the manufacturing of scientific instruments and is perfect for us to offer to our customers for a pure drinking experience. It is very important for us and our customers that the materials used in SIGG™ products meet high quality standards. For this reason, SIGG™ strives to maintain this quality in its products, not only by purchasing certified materials, but also through vigorous testing in third-party laboratories.

Tritan™

Sports bottles aren’t just for sports any more. Responsible hydration with reusable water bottles plays a role beyond the gym and has now expanded to home and office environments. Eastman Tritan™ copolyester combines impact strength with many other properties to ensure lasting aesthetics for your water bottle. Tritan™ copolyester has some outstanding attributes:

  • Glass like clarity – enhanced by outstanding gloss and resistance to cracking and crazing
  • Toughness – impact resistance
  • Dishwasher durability – chemical and heat resistance allows for repeated dishwasher cycles
  • BPA-free – manufactured without any bisphenols
3. Are SIGG™ bottles safe?

Of course. Since 1908, SIGG™ has only used the best and safest materials to produce its bottles. At SIGG™, we carry out extremely strict safety tests to ensure the highest quality toxin-free products for our customers. Our products have always exceeded the legal safety standards of all countries where we sell them. At SIGG™, we know that safety is important to our customers. For this reason, we put a huge effort into ensuring that every material we use is absolutely safe.

4. Is aluminium safe?

SIGG™ bottles made of aluminium are totally safe. We know that there have been some concerns surrounding the safety of aluminium related to the food industry, and we would never produce aluminium bottles that are harmful to our customers. Our aluminium bottles use a high-quality liner that makes our bottles safe for customers and compliant with all relevant consumer safety regulations in the countries where we sell them. SIGG™ always goes further when it comes to safety tests and we carry out not only the certified tests imposed by safety regulations, but also independent tests from third-party laboratories that help us to exceed stipulated safety levels.

5. Is stainless steel safe?

Yes. The 18/8 stainless steel SIGG™ uses for its bottles is specially selected for the food industry. We have regular contact with our partners in the factories to ensure that all quality and safety requirements are followed. Furthermore, after the bottles have been produced we carry out safety and quality tests at our headquarters in Switzerland. Nevertheless, we would not recommend using stainless steel to people with chrome or nickel allergies, as very small amounts of them may migrate from the material.

6. Is plastic safe?

The thermoplastic called polypropylene (PP) that SIGG™ uses to produce its bottles is totally free of toxins, such as BPA or phthalates, which are chemicals used to make plastic. One of the advantages of the PP is its heat resistance.

7. Is glass safe?

Glass is a material of choice for its excellence in the food industry. This is because glass is inert, which means it does not chemically interact with other materials and it protects contents from chemicals, BPA exposure and other types of contamination. Glass is also non-porous, so it does not transfer smells or flavours.

8. Do SIGG™ bottles contain BPA?

All SIGG™ bottles are free of BPA. All SIGG™ raw materials used for the bottles and all inks used for printing are BPA-free. We test all materials and parts of our bottles before they go to production and we carry out additional tests at third-party laboratories before the products go on the market.

9. What sizes are SIGG™ bottles?

SIGG™ offers different sizes for each of the product lines:

10. What is the liner? (What is it for, what is it made of?)

The liner is the coating used on the inside of the aluminium bottle. At SIGG™ we use a polyester-based protective liner for all aluminium bottles (like the ones used in food and drink cans throughout the world). It prevents your drink from developing peculiar tastes or smells!

11. Does SIGG™ still produce household products? (Indicate which retailers still sell them)

No. In 1998 SIGG™ stopped producing household products and focused on the production of drinking bottles.

12. How are SIGG™ bottles made?

SIGG™ is a small company and we are very proud of our long history of making high-quality products along with our continuing efforts to reduce our environmental impact. Our factory in Switzerland produces the bottles using over 55% renewable energy and with minimal waste. Note that 99% of our waste is recycled.

Aluminium

It all starts with a piece of aluminium that’s the shape of an ice hockey puck. Every puck is extruded by a 600-ton piston stroke and then flows along the piston, transforming it into a cylinder. The cylinder gets shaped into a bottle with the help of up to 26 differently shaped modules, each one moving the metal further towards the final shape. Once the bottle has the iconic form that we all know, the next step is to coat the inside of the bottle with our Eco-Care Liner to avoid direct contact between the liquids and the aluminium. Once the shape and the inside of the bottle are ready, we paint the outside with the desired colour and design using the screen-printing method. The lid is added and a manual quality check ensures that all bottles leaving the production line are in perfect condition.

Stainless steel

For all our stainless steel products we use 18/8 Food Grade Steel (AISI 304, SUS 304). Stainless steel 18/8 has excellent resistance to a wide range of atmospheric environments and liquids. Like all stainless steel, it can get rusty under severe conditions, but this rust can be polished or wiped away. The vacuum flasks consist of two cylinders: one placed within the other and joined at the neck. The gap between the two flasks is evacuated of air to form a vacuum. In all our vacuum flasks we insert a zirconium stone to draw out the final remaining parts of air to ensure an absolute vacuum and the best possible insulation.

Glass

Soda–lime glass is chemically stable, reasonably hard and extremely workable. Because it can be re-softened and re-melted numerous times, it is ideal for glass recycling. Borosilicate glass is a very chemical and temperature-resistant glass, which is mainly used for glassware in the laboratory, for chemical engineering and in the home.

Polypropylen-Tritan™-Trinkflaschen (VIVA; alle Tritan™-Flaschen)

Using the injection stretch blow moulding process, the plastic is first moulded into a "preform" using the injection moulding process. The preforms are produced with the necks of the bottle, including threads on one end. The preform then goes into the stretch blow moulding machine, which pushes high-pressure air into the bottle to create the shape.

Polypropylen (HERO)

In extrusion blow moulding (EBM), plastic is melted and extruded into a hollow tube and then captured by closing it into a cooled metal mould. Air is then blown into the tube, inflating it into the shape of the bottle. It is basically like making macaroni pasta and then shaping it with a mould.

13. Where are SIGG™ bottles made?

We are a proud Swiss company and, for this reason, wherever possible we prioritise Switzerland as a production location. This is why all SIGG™ aluminium bottles are produced in Switzerland. We are not always able to find a suitable production partner in the desired location, however, and therefore our stainless steel and glass bottles are produced by our partners in China, who apply our production guidelines and quality requirements. We produce most of our plastic bottles in Germany.

14. Why does SIGG™ produce bottles in China now?

The selection of the production site in China was not to import low-cost goods from the Far East to sell cheap products under our name. We don’t want to deceive our consumers in any way, and therefore we have removed the Swiss cross from the logo of this line. Another reason for choosing our producer in China was their expertise: for many years they have been producing high quality Thermos bottles and had the required experience in this segment, the necessary equipment, and trained staff. Although the bottles are produced outside of Switzerland, we can be sure that the Swiss spirit and quality remains in all of our products.

15. Safety tests & certifications

SIGG™ regularly conducts comprehensive testing of our products. We engage independent testing bodies for this purpose. The aim is to continuously check and guarantee the high quality of SIGG products. Some tests we perform: BPA Tests, LFGB, 1935/2004, 10/2011, FDA, Prop. 65.

16. Hand wash or dishwasher?

In general, we advise you not to wash your bottle in the dishwasher. The aggressive detergents used in dishwashers may affect the exterior paint, and in the case of the aluminium bottles, the internal coating. The warranty does not cover any damage to your bottle that can be proven to result from washing it in a dishwasher. Due to the narrow opening of the classic SIGG™ bottle, dishwashers do not provide the best cleaning results anyway. To ensure you can enjoy your SIGG™ bottle for a long time, we recommend you clean it regularly by hand. Rinse out the bottle and bottle top with hot water after every use, leave open to dry, and always store it with the top off.

17. Cleaning SIGG™ VIVA bottles

Our SIGG™ VIVA bottles are made of polypropylene and are dishwasher-safe due to the high temperature resistance of the material. However, we always recommend washing the bottle by hand and with a mild detergent or our Cleaning Tablets. This won’t damage the paint of the bottle and you can be sure that any aggressive dishwasher detergent will not affect the bottle. Thanks to its wide mouth, this bottle is very easy to clean with a brush or sponge.

18. Cleaning SIGG™ Hot & Cold bottles

We recommend you clean your SIGG™ Hot & Cold bottle before first use with 2 tablespoons of vinegar diluted with water and rinse thoroughly with hot water. After every use, we recommend removing the silicon gaskets for better cleaning. To make sure that the bottle doesn’t get damaged, we suggest washing it by hand. The best way to clean this bottle is with the SIGG™ Cleaning Tablets and water, or using a mild detergent instead. Do not use cleaning agents that contain chlorine or scouring agents.

19. Cleaning SIGG™ aluminium bottles

The best way to clean these bottles is with the SIGG™ Cleaning Tablets and water, or you can also use a mild detergent. Do not wash aluminium bottles in the dishwasher, as the paint and inner coating of the bottle can be damaged.

20. Cleaning SIGG™ glass bottles

Wash this bottle by hand only. Before first use, clean all parts with hot soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Do not use cleaners that contain bleach or chlorine. We recommend washing it with a soft cloth, sponge and SIGG™ Cleaning Tablets, or with a mild detergent. Do not use a steel brush or polishing agent for cleaning. The silicone parts can be removed and washed separately.

21. Alu boxes: characteristics and cleaning recommendations

The SIGG™ aluminium boxes are the perfect container for food that doesn’t need to be conserved at a certain temperature, as they do not have insulating properties. These boxes are made for containing solid foods, not liquids. Remember to hand wash the Alu boxes with soapy water and a sponge, as the dishwasher will damage the paint and the aluminium. Aluminium is a type of steel so please DO NOT use it in the microwave.

22. What liquids can I store in SIGG™ bottles?

All SIGG™ bottles have been tested with many different types of drinks, including acidic drinks, sparkling drinks, milk, alcohol, and apple and lemon juice. However, we recommend not to leave drinks with natural fermentation processes, such as apple juice or milk, inside the bottle for long periods of time. This natural process can produce gases and strong smells which can be difficult to eliminate.

23. Can small dents or pressure marks on the bottle damage the liner/internal coating?

Our internal Eco-Care liner is very flexible and shouldn’t be damaged by small external dents or pressure marks.

24. Gasket ring for screw top is not replaceable.

The gasket ring of our traditional and classic screw top is not replaceable. If the gasket has stains from humidity or mould, we recommend changing the top. It is important to clean the tops frequently and let them dry.

25. Is it possible that the paint of my bottle might chip?

Regular quality tests ensure a very tough external coating. However, deep scratches or large dents may cause the external coating to crack. If moisture gets in between the coating and the outside of the bottle, the paint may start to flake. This does not in any way affect the bottle’s functionality.

27. Are the bottles leakproof?

All SIGG™ tops normally remain watertight. However, even our tops and seals are subject to normal wear caused by intensive use. Tip: Do not clean bottle tops in the dishwasher. To wash your top, take it apart, rinse it out with hot water, and leave it to dry naturally. Another tip is that it is often helpful to replace the bottle seal. These are available as a spare part from your dealer or on our website.

28. The lining is dropping or peeling – what can I do?

If for some reason the inner liner of your bottle is dropping, we will be happy to try to help you. You can send us an email with pictures of the bottle and an explanation to our customer service.

29. Can I use my SIGG™ bottle to boil water?

No. SIGG™ bottles are made to contain liquids and not for cooking. Direct contact with fire or a kitchen stove can damage the outside and inside of the bottle.
